Last year we held the Create-a-Card Competition! So many people had incredible entries, but only one card could win! You voted for your favorite out of the 5 finalists, and the winner was SWARM KING by Jordan Cox.

We asked Jordan some questions about his inspiration for Swarm King and what it was like winning the competition!

What inspired you to participate in the competition?

Jordan: Doomlings has been my favorite game since I first played it back in 2022. I love the community and had participated in the Doomlings Yum Yum contest that year. I actually took second place with the cake pops I made, so I figured it would be worth a shot to try this competition! I’m so glad I did, too!

What were your thoughts while inventing Swarm King? How did you come up with the concept?

Jordan: I enjoyed the concept of Swarm cards, where every one played boosts the strength of all the others, despite whose trait pile it is in. But, obviously having multiple in your own pile becomes increasingly powerful and can be a huge game changer. So stealing Swarm cards late in the game was pretty common in my group!

The concept of Swarm King came pretty early for me, joking with friends about the possibility of a card to rule over the swarm and benefit from each Swarm card played. When this competition was announced, I decided to try to make that idea a reality.

How did you decide on the name? Did it change at any point?

Jordan: It always had to be Swarm King for me.

What’s your favorite part about Doomlings, and how does Swarm King fit into it?

Jordan: I love how there are so many different ways to play Doomlings, and so much of the game relies on adjusting your strategy as you go!

I think Swarm King adds an exciting layer of risk and reward with playing Swarm cards. If you play Swarm King too early, nobody will play Swarms and players might even try to remove them from their own trait pile before World’s End. But if you play it late in the game after enough Swarm cards have been played, it has huge potential for a big score!

What was the most exciting part of the design process for you?

Jordan: It was really fun bringing this idea I’ve had to life, and finding fun ways to try to fit it into the Doomlings universe. I knew I wanted a regal, but silly look, so I added the Dominant star symbol to his crown and scepter. And of course he had to have the new phone that all the other Swarms had been swarming over!

What do you hope players feel when they play with Swarm King?

Jordan: I hope it adds an extra layer of strategy to player’s games. It might turn people playing a lot of Swarm cards, or encouraging others to do so, into suspicious activity. I can only imagine the late-game tension of wondering if somebody’s holding Swarm King, just waiting for the right time to strike!

How did it feel to see your creation brought to life by Justus?

Jordan: Absolutely amazing! Doomlings has been my favorite game for years now. To see my own creation get officially added to it is just incredible. It’s destined to come up in conversation every time I play Doomlings for the rest of my life!

Have you played with Swarm King? If so, how did it go? 

Jordan: I’m one of those “all or nothing” Doomlings players, where I play with every card from every expansion in my deck! I live for the chaos. But with that being said, no, I haven’t played with Swarm King yet. This copy is going in a shadow box with my original drawing for permanent display!
